Children’s fabric covered buttons!

A beautiful collection of fabric covered buttons arrived last week – how adorable would these be on a child’s cardigan, dress, or jacket? Below is just a sampling – many more colours, themes, and sizes in stock.

Glass Buttons from Cathy Carr

Beautiful buttons from Cathy Carr of CC Beadworks arrived in the mail today. Each one of these is a work of art! Cathy uses a technique called “Lampwork” – glass is melted in a torch and then shaped within the flame – a process that can take up to 1.5 hours. Shaped pieces are then placed in a digitally controlled kiln overnight in order to make them strong and able to withstand stress. While the buttons are quite durable, they are glass and best kept out of the washing machine!  We’ve asked Cathy for a variety of buttons to start but we can order more per individual colour, size, and shape specifications. So if you’re looking for that perfect button for your handknit garment and can’t find it – why not ‘design’ your own?

Below are some photos Cathy sent us taken at work in her studio.

Patchwork Bags from St-Clair Designs have arrived and we’re happy we opted to give Megan, the designer, creative carte blanche with respect to fabrics and colour combinations – each of these is a work of art! For more details, see our previous blog here. Or visit the St-Clair Designs website.

New in Store: Habu Textiles

After much anticipation, our order from Habu Textiles has finally arrived! We are thrilled to be adding these unique and exquisite yarns to our shelves and are excited to begin experimenting with shapes, texture, and colour!  What to cast on first?

Silk Stainless Steel

(Photos: Habu Textiles)

A stainless steel core wrapped in silk – this yarn is surprisingly soft and supple.  The stainless steel provides the added benefit of built-in “memory” that allows for shaping of your finished project. Crinkle it, curl it, twist it – it will bend to your will and stay that way until you straighten it.   This yarn is easiest when knit using two strands and is often combined with Habu’s Fine Merino (see below). Content: 69% silk, 31% stainless steel / Yardage: 311 yds.  View available colours here. Most colourways in stock!

Tsumugi Silk

(Photos: Habu Textiles)

Tsumugi Silk is 100% silk with little specks of colour throughout giving it a slightly tweedy feel. Beacause it is soft and light, this yarn is ideal for summer garments.  It can be double- and triple-stranded to achieve the weight and gauge necessary for your project and it also combines well with other yarns. Content: 100% silk / Yardage: 450 yds. View available colours here. Most colourways in stock.

Fine Merino

(Photos: Habu Textiles)

Extremely soft and fine merino, this yarn lends itself to many different projects and can be used single-, double-, or triple-stranded. Although there are many available colourways, if you don’t find the exact shade you’re looking for, you can create your own by combining multiple strands of different colours. Can also be felted. Content: 100% merino / Yardage: 747 yds. View available colours here. Most colourways in stock.

New Store Sample: Simple (Extreme!) Luxury Scarf

The Simple Luxury Scarf by Anna & Heidi Pickles is one of those basic but highly effective designs that lets the yarn be the star of the show.  The original pattern calls for fingering merino stranded with silk mohair but we thought – why not take this up a notch – why not knit an extreme luxury version? It didn’t take us long to settle on Red Label Cashmere and Silk from Tanis Fiber Arts stranded with Filatura di Crosa’s Superior – an incredibly soft lace-weight blend of cashmere and silk.  The result is heavenly – lofty, delicate, and unbelievably cozy. The store sample pictured below uses Red Label in Charcoal paired with Superior in Black. With a new shipment of Red Label just arrived and a full stock of Superior already in store – the possibilities are endless…
