Winter / Spring 2012
INTRODUCTION TO HAND SPINNING New!
David Di Giacomo
$72 for three 2-hour sessions
Sundays, 10am to 12pm: February 5, 12, and 19
Spinning is the ancient textile art where fiber is turned into yarn – something every knitter or weaver can never have enough of! In this course, you will learn how to spin your very own yarn using a drop spindle. We will cover how to draft, spin, and wind your yarn, as well as various plying techniques and how to finish (set) it. You will also be learning about choosing and working with different kinds of fiber, and the various types of drop spindles available. You will need: 1/2 pound of corriedale fiber (or another similar long-stapled wool) and a drop spindle weighing around 1.5 ounces or less.
FINISHING (English Class)
Mona Schmidt
$72 for three 2-hour sessions
Mondays, 6:30 to 8:30pm: February 13, 20, and 27
Pre-requisites: none
Learn how to finish your project professionally. Binding off, weaving in ends, seaming with mattress stitch, picking up stitches for button bands and edgings, three-needle bind-off, sewing the underarm of a project knit in the round – all of this will be covered in this class. You will need: 2 Stockinette stitch swatches, measuring about 6×6″, tapestry needle, enough yarn to work with in main colour and contrast colour, knitting needles in two sizes – one in the size you worked up the swatches and one size smaller than that. The third evening is reserved for your projects you need help with.
SKILL-BUILDER WORKSHOP – FIXING MISTAKES (English Class)
Mona Schmidt
$36 for one 3-hour session
Wednesday, 6:00 to 9:00pm: March 7
Pre-requisites: cast on, knit, purl
You are confident with your knitting, but making a mistake still makes you crazy? We will have a look at common mistakes, like twisted and dropped stitches, extra yarn-overs, unwanted increaes and decreases…and whatever else comes up! I will demonstrate how to fix the before mentioned. You will need: Any of your knitting, with or without mistakes, to practise on, together with a crochet hook, spare needles (double-pointed or circulars), possibly a stitch holder.
SKILL-BUILDER WORKSHOP – COLOURWORK (English Class)
Mona Schmidt
$36 for one 3-hour session
Wednesday, 6:00 to 9:00pm: March 14
Pre-requisites: cast on, knit, purl
Learn about colourwork – a look at the history, different methods of what is called “colourwork” in knitting. We will practise how to knit with more than one colour and also learn tips and tricks to make it work. You will need: Several colours of your yarn of choice (try to avoid cotton or superwash yarn, 100% wool makes the method easier).
Two sets of circular needles – one in the size you would work the yarn and a set one size up from that.
SKILL-BUILDER WORKSHOP – ENTRELAC New!
David Di Giacomo
$36 for one 3-hour session
Friday, 6:00 to 9:00pm: March 16
Pre-requisites: cast on, knit, purl
Entrelac is a knitting technique where blocks of squares are worked one at a time while simultaneously being joined to the rest of the work. This produces a piece that looks as if it is woven with narrow bands of knitting. It may look intimidating to do but at its core requires only basic knitting skills. This workshop will cover learning the basic techniques by knitting a sample piece, choosing the right materials for the effect you want, working entrelac flat or in the round, and ideas for incorporating entrelac into your projects. You will need: Yarn of your choice and a set of needles.
