Free pattern Friday: Rikke

The Rikke Hat by Sarah Young is my new favourite hat for winter.  It’s long been a favourite of knitters on Ravelry (nearly 5000 projects posted to date!) but I’ve been slow to appreciate the modest qualities of this simple pattern. Modern, minimalist, and chic, Rikke has just the right amount of slouch, is flattering on everyone, takes only one skein, and is a great choice for both semi-solid and variegated colorways as the garter stitch helps to offset any pooling. Designed for DK weight yarn, this would be lovely in Tosh Merino DK, Tanis Fiber Arts Yellow Label, or Manos del Uruguay Silk Blend.  To top it all off, the combination of garter stitch and long-tail cast-on method make the hat very elastic and, generally, one-size-fits-all! I’m telling you, it’s the hat that just keeps giving🙂

I love this pattern too but I knit mine flat so I could just knit and avoid the purl rows. The seam is not very noticeable and is partly hidden by the hat as it slouches!
