Book recommendation: Knit for Health & Wellness – How to knit a flexible mind and more…

Somewhat irresponsibly, I am making this book recommendation without yet having read the book. 🙂 But yesterday I spent an hour watching Kristy Glass’s recent interview with the author and immediately ordered a copy from Amazon. Those of us who knit or crochet have always attested to the benefits – the meditative effect, the peace it brings, the community it creates, the creative outlet it provides – for many of us, knitting is a calm centre in the middle of our busy, sometimes stressful lives. We just know, intuitively, that it does us good. But did you know why? Betsan Corkhill has spent many years researching the benefits of knitting on our health and has even taken things further with an exploration of how knitting can be used therapeutically to help people coping with specific conditions.

I’m looking forward to digging into my copy when it arrives later today and I may write more here about what I learn but, in the meantime, find a description of the book below as well as Kristy Glass’s interview with Betsan. Grab your knitting and enjoy!

–  Melissa

Betsan Corkhill’s book will transform the way you think about your health, wellness and knitting. It rises above other self-help books because it provides an accessible tool which gets you actively involved in improving your health and wellbeing and shows you how to do this any time, anywhere. It quite literally puts the power in your hands.

Discover –

  • What knitting has in common with the leading edge of neuroscience
  • The secret power of your hand movements and their influence on your brain
  • How knitting naturally brings about a state of mind that doctors the world over are eager to encourage
  • How knitting can be used as a tool to help anyone, including those with complex health conditions
  • How knitting helps to erase your social concerns to build strong support networks and communities
  • How knitting can help you beat loneliness to feel belonged, enjoy fun and laughter and easy banter
  • How Therapeutic Knitting can kick start a healing process.

Learn how to –

  • Knit therapeutically
  • Choose the needles and yarn to maximise the benefits to you
  • Recognise the power and value of different types of project and when to best use them

Betsan shares her knowledge of using Therapeutic Knitting clinically and integrates this with recent research, her medical knowledge, data from a survey of over 3,500 knitters from 31 countries, and numerous stories sent to her from knitters around the globe. Her writing style makes this an easy, enjoyable read whilst at the same time conveying valuable neuroscience, research and knowledge which will improve your life. Betsan is the recognised world expert on the use of Therapeutic Knitting for improving health, wellness and managing illness. She has pioneered this research since 2005.

New in store: Sweater Workshop by Cocoknits, latest Pom Pom Quarterly

Cocoknits Sweater Workshop by Julie Weisenberger

cocoknits2

Julie Weisenberger’s (Cocoknits) beautiful new book – Sweater Workshop – has just landed in store and we are swooning!  Gorgeous, tailored, top-down sweater designs in a variety of flattering silhouettes. More projects just landed in our queues!

From the Cocoknits website:

With over 30 years of knitting, designing, and teaching experience – Julie Weisenberger has compiled nine new sweater designs into her first book: Cocoknits Sweater Workshop. These new patterns employ the same simple, seamless, top-down styling techniques we’ve come to expect from Cocoknits.

More than just a collection, this book explains the Cocoknits Method – a system of tracking knitting progress in your own easy to follow customized chart. Unlike most traditional patterns that create flat shapes, the tailored style of construction in these patterns creates truly three dimensional garments that impart a great fit upon completion.

The innovative color-coded charting technique shows exactly where to work shaping elements without having to continually read and interpret pattern abbreviations, and at the same time allows the knitter complete control over customization to achieve a fantastic fit. All designs are worked from the neckline down, so once the neck and yoke area are established, the knitter can just cruise through generating the sweater and not worry about counting or losing track of their place in the pattern. Another advantage of knitting top-down is the ability to try on your garment as you work, to ensure the fit is right.

In addition to all new patterns, Julie has dedicated a section of the book to an in-depth guide to choosing the right patterns for your figure type with considerations for colorwork, textured stitches, and hemlines all working in concert to create the right silhouette for you.

New and re-stocked: Pom Pom Quarterly and Jared Flood’s Woolens

Pom Pom Quarterly – Issue 19: Winter 2016

pompom

From the Pom Pom website:

With the arrival of winter comes the opportunity to revel in our favourite woolly pasttime as we move towards colder months. While the light and seasons change we can look back at the year so far and take stock of what we’ve made and learned.

The inspiration for our Winter 2016 issue is ‘reflections’, interpreted in many ways by our contributors in articles, cocktail recipes, and a beautiful set of illustrations. This theme has also been translated into stunning knits by our designers; abstract forms of shadows, or refracted light on water became the inspiration for the playful symmetry and elegant geometry of these eleven designs.

Featuring designs by: JULIA FARWELL-CLAY // JUSTYNA LORKOWSKA // CLARE LAKEWOOD // KIYOMI BURGIN // SACHIKO BURGIN // FRANCESCA HUGHES // SOLÈNE LE ROUX // GEORGIA FARRELL // LINDA DUBEC // TATYANA SCOTCE // SARAH SHEPHERD

Especially for sock knitters…

…some great new books in stock! While Op-Art Socks may be more up the experienced sock knitter’s alley, The Sock Knitter’s Workshop is great for beginners too.

“Enjoy a fresh new approach to sock knitting! Stephanie van der Linden is a master knitter and shows her technical skills to great effect in Op-Art Socks. A collector of op-art ceramics, she was inspired to translate graphic optical illusions into knitted patterns for socks, replicating their eye-popping effects. Op-Art Socks contains 19 projects. Explore graphic colorwork, textured knitting (knit and purl), shadow knitting, and shifting ribbing to create optical illusions. The book includes black and white swatches of all patterns so that you can readily perceive the op-art illusions in each piece.”

“Learn to knit socks with confidence—and achieve beautiful results. Socks are at the top of every knitter’s list of favorite projects: Quick to make, highly portable, and usually only requiring a ball of yarn or two, it’s easy to see why they love them.  And The Sock Knitter’s Workshop is the essential companion for beginning and advanced knitters alike. Expert sock knitters Ewa Jostes and Stephanie van der Linden share their sage wisdom on the essentials of sock knitting, beginning with an overview of materials and tools and the basics of the sock-knitting process. Knitters can mix and match from among many different methods of casting-on and knitting cuffs, heels, and toes to create their own unique designs that fit just right. With extensive step-by-step instructions and hundreds of illustrations plus fifteen patterns, this book provides sock knitters with inspiration and advice for all their projects.”

Rowan Magazine 55 has arrived!

“The Spring/Summer 2014 season looks to two opposing directions, one heavenly and future facing, the other grounded and ancient in its appeal. We see a mix of delicate pastel lace designs, bold and beautiful stripes and inspiring colour blended stripes, rustic textures and handcrafted artisan crochet. We see inspiration taken from Moorish tile art, Antique floral lace patterns and geographical patterning that can be found in rock formations.”
