New free pattern from Espace Tricot: Summer Commitment

Lisa’s Summer Commitment bag has just been added to Ravelry! This is a larger version of our Summer Fling Bag. It is the perfect bag for strolling around town, going to market, or a day at the beach (yes, believe it or not, those days are just around the corner). The bottom is knit flat and then stitches are picked up for knitting the main body in the round. Straps are then knit flat one at a time and are joined using Kitchener stitch. If you wish to knit a cross-body style bag then an extra skein of Kilim yarn will be required.

Mayu – A new free pattern from Espace Tricot

mayu4

Mayu is an easy to wear pullover that is perhaps best described as a stylish poncho with sleeves. The tweediness of the Fine Donegal and the soft halo of the Silk Cloud combine to create a beautiful fabric that is both slightly rustic and decidedly sophisticated. Cozy and chic!

The left back of sweater is knit first, stitches for right half are picked up from cast on edge. Front is knit separately. After sewing up the sweater, the turtleneck is added by picking up stitches around the neck opening.

New (free) pattern from Espace Tricot: Simple Modern Throw

blanketa01

So, calling this a pattern may be stretching things a little¬†but we received¬†so many requests for specifics after Lisa blogged about knitting it¬†for her home that we had¬†to share this¬†very simple recipe. A modern colour-block throw works¬†in just about any space,¬†and soft and squishy garter stitch always brings warmth and comfort. Lisa decided on a 1/3 to 2/3 split for her version but¬†this is an opportunity to play with colour. ¬†Do equal halves or use more than two colours! It’s a mindless, soothing project that lends itself well to knitting in company or while watching TV. ¬†A perfect choice for¬†calming frayed nerves. ūüôā

New free pattern from Espace Tricot: Wrapped in Lino

wrapped_in_lino7

Wrapped in Lino is similar to our Kigali Nights Shawl but is much wider and larger, and the whole piece is knit in stockinette. It remains a parallelogram with both ends knit using short rows to create sloped lines. The pattern is easily modified by casting on more or less stitches and changing the length of the stockinette section. This, however, will affect the required yardage.

A lovely, elegant shawl that can be dressed up or down. Perfect on cool summer evenings or in air-conditioned spaces.

Easy breezy summer tanks

It always amazes us when customers mention that their knitting is a seasonal affair, a passion that they tuck away during the spring and summer, seemingly unaware that there is an¬†alternate universe brimming with¬†exquisite fibres and beautiful patterns designed specifically for the warmer¬†months. ¬†We derive so much pleasure¬†from our knitting that we could¬†never envision¬†a scenario in which we didn’t have¬†something (something!) on our needles, maintaining our equilibrium, at all times. That said, and because it is our duty to enable and inspire, we are sharing patterns over the next weeks perfect for keeping your needles moving from April through August! ūüôā

Today, a focus on tank tops…

New Free Espace Tricot Pattern / Store Sample: Whirligig

whirligig8

whirligig3

Whirligig¬†is a light-hearted and whimsical scarf knit with alternating colours of Noro¬†Taiyo¬†yarn. Knit in the round as a long tube, ‚Äúresting‚ÄĚ yarns are carried up along the inside of the scarf so there are, miraculously, just a few ends to sew in at the end of all those stripes. The profusion of colour will soothe your eyes and brighten your mood on bleak winter days and the double-thickness fabric will keep you warm and toasty.

Please note, this is not an original pattern ‚Äď various versions of tubular scarves abound on Ravelry. This is simply a summary of what we did to achieve this particular effect.

Comfort Cloud: Free pattern!

comfort_cowl1

Last weekend, in between knitting hats for 25,000 Tuques, I decided to cast on a cowl in one of my new favourite yarns. DROPS¬†Cloud¬†is a deliciously light blend of baby alpaca¬†and cozy merino¬†wool. It’s¬†classified as a “blown yarn”, meaning that the alpaca and merino fibers are blown into a tube;¬†items knit with yarns created in this way¬†are about¬†30-35% lighter than those made with conventional spun yarns of the same thickness. DROPS Cloud feels perfectly soft and comfortable¬†against the skin¬†and is totally itch-free! Ideal¬†for blankets, big scarves, shawls, and thick sweaters.

This is such a simple project, it’s hardly worth writing up as a formal pattern.
Here’s all you need to know:

COMFORT CLOUD COWL

Materials:
2 balls of DROPS Cloud
1 set of 9 mm, 16″ circular needles

Pattern:
Cast on 64 sts and join to knit in the round.
Every round: *k2, p2, repeat from *¬†(in other words, 2×2 ribbing)
Work until cowl is 17″ tall (finished circumference is between 18″ and 19″)
Cast off loosely in pattern.

Enjoy!

Kigali Nights

kigali1

Kigali Nights is a¬†beautiful, vibrant wrap¬†knit during Lisa’s¬†recent trip to Rwanda.¬†The¬†shawl is a parallelogram with one end sloping more than the other. It¬†begins with stockinette and short rows, which creates a gentle slope. Half-way¬†through the pattern switches to reverse stockinette with short row shaping at the end creating a steeper slope. Knit with the incredibly soft and gorgeously hued Merletto laceweight yarn from the incomparable Julie Asselin, this shawl will wrap you in luxurious warmth and colour.

Chevron Baby Blanket: Video Tutorial

zigzag5_medium2Our Chevron Baby Blanket has enjoyed a fair share of attention over the last year (it’s been ‘favourited’ more than 8000 times on Ravelry!) and, although it is a very simple design, the pattern uses one or two stitches that have confused some beginner knitters.¬† We’re happy to let you know that a video tutorial explaining all aspects of the blanket from long-tail cast-on to casting off and blocking is now available on YouTube.¬† iKNITS contacted us some time ago to obtain permission to feature this in her pattern tutorial collection and we wholeheartedly gave it. We couldn’t be more pleased with the results. We hope many of you will find this helpful!
