Family Slippers!

img_2092

I got it in my head recently that we all needed slippers.  A pair for Tristan had been on my list since before Christmas but all good intentions fell by the wayside in January as we enjoyed a mild winter here in New Jersey and more exciting projects jumped ahead in the queue.  One little snowfall last week, though, and it became imperative (at least in my mind) that we all have cozy new house “shoes”.  I wound up some Quince & Co. Osprey in Honey and cast on Simone A.’s brilliantly simple (and free) pattern appropriately titled “Simple House Slippers” and finished Tristan’s pair in no time.  I’m now halfway through my pair in the Audouin colourway and will wrap up this family project with a much larger pair for Johannes in Sabine. If I had been thinking, I would have knit his pair first and gifted them to him for Valentine’s Day but, well, nope.

Osprey is a cushy, comfy, 3-ply Aran-weight yarn spun from fluffy wool fleece. I’m knitting the yarn at quite a dense gauge on 4.5 mm(US 6) needles for a sturdy fabric that’s both comfortable and hard-wearing.  One skein is enough for a range of average foot sizes – Tristan wears a size 9 men’s and there was enough left for at least another size up. My husband wears a size 12, though, and his will need to be wider as well as longer so part of a second skein may be required. Watch this space for an update!

Introducing Brooklyn Tweed at Espace Tricot

bt_blog_header1

If you’ve been following us on Facebook and Instagram lately then you will already have heard the good news. If not, then let me be the first to share with you that Brooklyn Tweed yarns are now available at Espace Tricot!

Brooklyn Tweed began offering it’s first 100% American made wool and yarn design collections in 2010 – the same year we opened our own doors.  Although we have been stocking Brooklyn Tweed patterns since the beginning, we have had to wait very patiently as the company slowly and thoughtfully expanded their retail network in line with supply and demand.  Needless to say, we were thrilled to learn just after Christmas that we would finally be able to add Brooklyn Tweed yarns to our inventory.  Since it’s arrival we have been beset by difficult decisions – what to knit first? what colours? which yarn quality? There are so many options to choose from, each more inspiring and beautiful than the next. I think the only thing to do is dive in and begin…. Stay tuned to hear more about our first choices. 🙂

In the meantime, let us introduce you to Shelter, Arbor, and Loft below and provide you with just a little visual inspiration. Be sure to browse projects knit with these yarns on Ravelry for more ideas!

Shelter

dyfxjqgyufze619ez5n7hs9bjn1-hxcpm86wwwwjoxy

From the Brooklyn Tweed website…  The distinctive character of Targhee-Columbia wool shines in Shelter, Brooklyn Tweed’s versatile medium-weight yarn. Shelter is woolen spun, meaning the fibers remain in a lofty jumble that traps air and offers remarkable warmth and lightness. Woolen-spun yarns are more adaptable in gauge, as they can compress to a dense sport weight or bloom to cohere as a gauzy fabric when worked on large needles. Shelter has a dry, soft hand and a faintly rustic nature. Garments knit from Shelter achieve their full beauty after a wet blocking. Shelter is designed to be a workhorse yarn that invites cables, ribbing, textured stitch motifs, open work, plain stockinette and garter stitch. Ideal for sweaters of every variety, winter accessories, and blankets.

100% American wool / 50g / 128 m / 140 y / 20 sts per 4″ / 4.5 mm (US 7) needles

Arbor

ouhmnpolaees0mdlmafu9fg8chmu4trtrouu6hbaoyo

From the Brooklyn Tweed website…  Arbor is Brooklyn Tweed’s DK-weight workhorse yarn, spun worsted for superior strength and stitch. It’s a round and springy 3-ply that loves to cable and shows textural stitchwork to maximum advantage. Thanks to its worsted construction, Arbor produces a denser, sturdier fabric than BT’s woolen-spun yarns. The fibers have been combed straight and carefully aligned before spinning, rather than jumbled to trap air. Garments knit from Arbor will weigh more and drape more heavily than those knit from Loft or Shelter.  Available in a nuanced palette of 30 solid colors.

Loft

l3fcrzjw8i11bol2y3x4xnci3dmi5hs05d4a-5p_bne

From the Brooklyn Tweed website… Fingering-weight Loft channels Targhee-Columbia wool’s airy bounce into feather-light lace, accessories, and garments. Like Shelter, Loft is a woolen-spun 2-ply yarn with delicate twist, specially designed for unique lightness of hand. It’s not a sock yarn, so treat it a little more gently when it’s on the winder and the needles. Once your garment is blocked, the stitches will cohere in a beautifully even and sturdy fabric. Lace garments should open up to reveal stitch motifs with relatively mild blocking. Loft has great flexibility of gauge; it can be knit on 2mm (US 0) needles for a dense and durable fabric or on 4mm (US 6) needles for ethereal open work. Two strands of Loft held together can substitute for Shelter in patterns where you’d like greater stitch definition or a marled fabric of two colors.

New project idea: Vertices Unite in Woolfolk FAR!

vertices_woolfolk2

Vertices Unite by Stephen West is one of our favourite patterns to knit and wear. In this version, Lisa opted to knit the smaller size in a worsted weight yarn to create a warm and cozy winter scarf without too much bulk. The Woolfolk Far makes this an exquisitely soft accessory and the use of just one colour adds to the minimalist chic factor. The monochromatic colour choice and contrasting icord edge allow the “vertices” to stand out and make this shawl all about the texture. Unfortunately, this won’t live in the store as a sample because Lisa cannot be parted from it.  Photos will have to suffice as inspiration. 🙂

Mayu – A new free pattern from Espace Tricot

mayu4

Mayu is an easy to wear pullover that is perhaps best described as a stylish poncho with sleeves. The tweediness of the Fine Donegal and the soft halo of the Silk Cloud combine to create a beautiful fabric that is both slightly rustic and decidedly sophisticated. Cozy and chic!

The left back of sweater is knit first, stitches for right half are picked up from cast on edge. Front is knit separately. After sewing up the sweater, the turtleneck is added by picking up stitches around the neck opening.

Join us for an Om Shawl Knit-Along!

om1

One of our favourite additions to the store this year has been Woolstok yarn from Blue Sky Fibers.  This worsted-weight yarn is strong and sturdy but gently plied to give it lightness, loft, and a soft hand. Rich in character with excellent stitch definition, Woolstok is a workhorse yarn that’s easy to love. A dream to knit with and available in a beautiful palette of slightly heathered colourways, it’s perfect for everything from accessories to sweaters.

21_color_2

The first project we decided to knit with this wooly goodness was Andrea Mowry’s Om Shawl – and we couldn’t be happier with the result.  With colour and technique changes throughout, the wrap is entertaining to knit and a gorgeous, versatile addition to any winter wardrobe.  After a light steam blocking of the finished wrap, the fabric softened and relaxed but retained body and loft – exactly what one wants from a 100% wool yarn! We opted for shades of grey with a pop of chartreuse for our store sample but the sky’s the limit when it comes to colour-play with this pattern. Need inspiration? Click here to browse amazing versions of this project on Ravelry.

Here’s designer Andrea Mowry’s version of the wrap…

We will be running our Om Shawl Knit-Along as both an in-store and virtual event (through Ravelry) beginning January 26th. If you are able to join us in the shop, we will meet for 4 consecutive Thursdays – January 26, February 2, 9, and 16 – from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. No need to register (this is a free activity), simply come in on those dates ready to cast on and knit the Om Shawl among friends.

We will open an Om Shawl KAL thread in our Ravelry group a few days before the knit-along start date. We invite you to join us there (even if you are knitting with us in-store) to indicate your intention to participate and to chatter and share photos of works in progress.

UPDATE: The “Introductions & Chatter” thread for the Om Shawl KAL has now been created in our Ravelry group HERE.

If you complete your Om Shawl by March 2nd and upload your photo to the finished object thread for this knit-along in our Ravelry group, you will have a chance to win an Espace Tricot Eco Tote and a Woolstok 21-Colour Slouch Kit! The winner will be chosen via random number generator from the finished object thread (one entry per person only please).

New store sample: Endless Wrap by Sylvia Hager

b_1

Lisa and I first saw the Endless Wrap by Sylvia Hager on the runway at the the National Needlearts Trade Show in the Spring and were smitten with the texture and generous scale of it. When we visited the Blue Sky Fibers booth we tumbled even further in love when we felt the Woolstok yarn – lofty and cozy and decidedly wooly. In the end, we decided to knit our version somewhat shorter than the original (we used six 50 g balls instead of nine) but it is still very generous in length!

View additional photos and project details on our Ravelry page.

Note: Woolstok is available in the full colour range in 50 g balls and in several neutrals in 150 g balls. Two 150 g balls would be enough to complete a version like ours.

New and re-stocked: Pom Pom Quarterly and Jared Flood’s Woolens

Pom Pom Quarterly – Issue 19: Winter 2016

pompom

From the Pom Pom website:

With the arrival of winter comes the opportunity to revel in our favourite woolly pasttime as we move towards colder months. While the light and seasons change we can look back at the year so far and take stock of what we’ve made and learned.

The inspiration for our Winter 2016 issue is ‘reflections’, interpreted in many ways by our contributors in articles, cocktail recipes, and a beautiful set of illustrations. This theme has also been translated into stunning knits by our designers; abstract forms of shadows, or refracted light on water became the inspiration for the playful symmetry and elegant geometry of these eleven designs.

Featuring designs by: JULIA FARWELL-CLAY // JUSTYNA LORKOWSKA // CLARE LAKEWOOD // KIYOMI BURGIN // SACHIKO BURGIN // FRANCESCA HUGHES // SOLÈNE LE ROUX // GEORGIA FARRELL // LINDA DUBEC // TATYANA SCOTCE // SARAH SHEPHERD

New store sample: Wurm

With a double-thickness brim and the perfect amount of slouch, the Wurm hat, by Katharina Nopp, is funky and stylish and, above all, warm. We knit our version with 1 ball of Schoppel-Wolle Gradient, a soft 100% merino with gorgeous transitional colour changes.  We used a worsted weight yarn (instead of sport weight) so we cast on 82 stitches instead of 90 and used larger needles.

The Sweater Care Kit

cocoknits_sweater_care_kit1

The Cocoknits Sweater Care Kit contains everything you need for handwashing and blocking your hand-knit items and all of your fine hand-washables. The kit is perfect for:

  • blocking seamless sweaters or accessories which do not require pinning
  • washing and drying seamed sweaters, either hand-knit or store-bought

If you knit mostly scarves, shawls, seamed sweaters and other pin-able items, the Knitter’s Block kit is probably best for you.

To protect surfaces from water, lay the Sweater Care Kit on the Knitter’s Block or other surface not susceptible to water damage. Wash super-absorbent towels in cold water and air dry.

cocoknits_sweater_care_kit3

The Sweater Care Kit includes:

  • two fine mesh, zippered laundry bags (small: 8″ × 12 × 8″, large: 8″ × 22″ × 8″)
  • one large super-absorbent towel (dimensions 36″ × 60″)
  • one super-absorbent grid towel, inches and centimeters on opposite sides (dimensions 40″ × 40″)
  • one mesh pop-up dryer (dimensions 28″ × 34″ opened, 11″ diameter folded)
  • a bottle of unscented Eucalan wash
  • jute bag (dimensions 15″ × 12″ × 5″)

THE Knitter’s Block

cocoknits_knitters_block2

Everything you need to block your handknits.

  • 18 interlocking, fiber-topped EVA foam tiles, each measures 12″ × 12″ (tiles from the new kit are compatible with older Knitter’s Block tiles)
  • 40 stainless steel T-pins
  • 48″ square cotton cloth woven with 1″ square gingham to help measure your finished piece
  • A sturdy jute bag to contain the kit

cocoknits_knitters_block1

What makes Knitter’s Block special?

Very low, lightly barbed pile – fabric covering gently grips your knitting without pilling or leaving fibers

Versatile – can be assembled in a variety of sizes from a square for sweater pieces, a long rectangle for scarves or a triangle for shawls

Thick backing of waterproof EVA – suitable for use on any surface since moisture won’t seep through, holds pins firmly in place, blocked items dry faster than with towels because the tiles don’t absorb water

Heat resistant – essential for steam blocking

Compact – blocks are stored in a sturdy 14”x14” bag

Just re-stocked: Shibui Silk Cloud and Pebble!

shibui_clouds

Two exquisite yarns from Shibui Knits were re-stocked last week – just as the weather turned decidedly cooler.  Feast your eyes on Silk Cloud and Pebble! Knit together or alone, these yarns will take any project to the “next level”… 🙂

Shibui Silk Cloud

shibui_silk_cloud

This weightless yarn shines with radiance. Knit Silk Cloud by itself for an ethereal fabric or strand it with another yarn for a glowing halo.

60% Kid Mohair / 40% Silk
330 yds / 300 m / 25 g
20 sts = 4″ on 7 US / 4.5 mm

Shibui Pebble

shibui_pebble

Light and soft, Pebble is a tweed flecked yarn with complex colors. It easily doubles and triples, gathering depth without effort.

48% Recycled Silk / 36% Fine Merino / 16% Cashmere
224 yds / 205 m / 25 g
25 sts = 4″ on 3 US / 3.25 mm

A little project inspiration….

Here are two projects we’ve knit which combine these two gorgeous yarns.

Groovy

groovy_shibui5

We’ve knit several versions of the the Groovy pattern by JumperCablesKnitting but this one may be our favourite. The Silk Cloud and Pebble were a dream pairing and the finished texture is light, warm, and soft with a delicate halo.  The addition of the contrast stripe at the end adds a modern edge to an otherwise “quiet” shawl and the shape of the piece allows it to work as a wrap or scarf.

Click here for more photos and details on our Ravelry project page.

Cirrus

cirrus2

We love everything about the Cirrus pullover by Shellie Anderson – the unique shape, the length, the collar. The Silk Cloud lends shimmer while the Pebble provides structure and beautiful drape. From the generous cowl neck to the curve of the hem, there are no sharp angles to this piece.  An elegant topper over a longer blouse or tunic. Soft and warm and light as air.

Lisa’s First (Yarn) Love

oatmeal_blanketaa

After having completed my first knitting project, the essential beginner’s scarf (a 2 x 2 rib no less) in March 2008, I felt I was ready to tackle a more substantial project. Of course, being who I am, a blanket was first on my list.  Back then, it was still necessary to request an access code to join Ravelry, which took a few weeks due to high demand and low resources, and so, as I anticipated my membership into the coveted online knitting community, I perused the books in my local LYS and came across the Big Bad Baby Blanket in Debbie Stoller’s Stitch ‘n Bitch book. I immediately fell in love with the look of the beautiful Koigu KPPPM yarn featured in the pattern, however, as I wanted to make it “bigger and badder”, my budget couldn’t support knitting it with that divine yarn.

blanketb1

Weighing my options, I decided on Jo Sharp’s Silkroad Aran Tweed in the “Beach” colourway for its rustic luxury and proceeded to readjust the pattern to my desired size. The only obstacle remaining was that the Addi Turbo needles I needed weren’t in stock and I was leaving soon on vacation. I couldn’t bring myself to knit with any other needles and, even though I was a beginner, I knew what I loved!  Happily, the needles arrived just in time for me to grab them just before my flight and everything in my world was right again.

I knit and knit and knit and knit some more and was so pleased with myself, having completed the blanket pretty well and in timely manner.  Sewing in my ends in the seed stitch border, however, proved to be another story. Though I was shown multiple times how to achieve an invisible look, I just couldn’t get it back then. I still couldn’t read my knitting well and had to accept that it would be what it would be. Fortunately, the dreamy yarn was tweedy and very good at hiding imperfections.

In addition, being a novice, I hadn’t done the proper calculations and my chef d’oeuvre ended up wider rather than longer.  Still, if you didn’t look at the direction of the stitches you could turn it around and it looked just as it was meant to be, a nice 4 1/2’ x 6’ rectangular blanket!

blanketb06

For many years after that experience, I tried to find Jo Sharp yarns again but they had  become unavailable in North America due to distribution issues.  Imagine my surprise and happiness when we stumbled upon the Jo Sharp booth at the TNNA trade show this year.  We immediately placed an order with the lovely Gretchen of Kingfisher Yarns (the current distributor) and are now very pleased to have added  Silkroad Aran Tweed to our collection. We hope that you will love this yarn as much as we do!

oatmeal-blanketbb

I have rejigged the numbers in order to achieve the proportional result I should have had –  here are my modifications if you’re interested in creating a “bigger badder” Big Bad Baby Blanket too.

Yarn: Jo Sharp Silkroad Aran Tweed – 22 balls OR 2000 m of worsted weight yarn
Needles: 5 mm (US *) 40″ circular knitting needles
Gauge: 18 sts and 26 rows per 4″ / 10 cm in stockinette
Finished dimensions: Approximately 58″ x 72″
Cast on: 248 sts
