Website updgrade

We have been working very hard over the last few months to upgrade our website and the time has now come to go ‘live’!  No new website launch is without it’s challenges, however, so we ask for your patience and understanding as we work to fix any bugs or kinks that only become apparent once our new site is up and running.

In particular, we anticipate issues with our French translations, most noticeably for notifications and e-mail confirmations as our new platform does not move seamlessly from one language to the next.

Also, if you are a current webstore customer of ours you will be required to create a new account and, unfortunately, will no longer have access to your previous orders nor wish lists. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause! Should you need any information about a previous order, please do not hesitate to contact us and we will be happy to pull your information up through our point-of-sale system.

Thank you for your continued support! We will do our best to move through this transition as quickly as possible.

May the force be with us!

New Espace Tricot pattern: The Cooler Side of Warm

We have a new FREE pattern for you this week! The Cooler Side of Warm is a cozy cowl knit from the bottom up. It begins with 1×1 ribbing knit flat and then is joined to be worked in the round. As a result, it has a split-hem on one side that allows it to sit comfortably on the shoulder and lie flat against the back and chest. It is finished with 1×1 rib on a smaller needle to prevent gaping at the neck.

Woolfolk Far makes this functional beauty exquisitely soft and decidedly sophisticated. Turn down part of the ribbing and attach a Latch Leather Closure from Jul Designs to add a little attitude 🙂 . We have lots of Far in stock at the moment (the pattern requires 3 skeins) and a new shipment of leather closures from Jul is on the way!

See additional photos and project details and access the free pattern on our Ravelry page!

Rockin’ Rows by Martina Behm

Our version of Martina Behm’s Rockin’ Rows combines a SweetGeorgia Prismatic Mini Set and Artfil Belle in the White Sands colourway to create a stunning finished object – if we say so ourselves! The colours are so beautiful and perfectly assembled in this kit from SweetGeorgia and soft and springy Belle is always a treat to work with. Chevron stripes and frequent colour changes make this project engaging from beginning to end – no boring middle parts here.

Groovy by Annie Baker

We love the Groovy pattern by Annie Baker so much we’ve worked up several versions of it. This time, we knit it in SweetGeorgia’s luxurious CashLuxe Spark, for a decidedly glam evening look. The stellina is subtle, the cashmere is yummy. The shawl is perfection.

Cross Hatch Shawl by Benjamin Matthews

The Crosshatch Shawl by Benjamin Matthews is a simple knit but the end result is beautiful and dramatic. The Lang Viva provides gorgeous dynamic colour changes while the Manos del Uruguay Maxima lends beautiful contrast. This is a perfect pattern for beginners ready to work with more than one yarn.

New store sample: Pine Bough Cowl by Dianna Walla

The Pine Bough Cowl by Dianna Walla is a beautiful, graphic cowl with a botanical feel.  We used Tanis Fiber Arts PureWash DK for our store sample and love the soft yet structured hand of the finished fabric. The pattern is well-written and easy to follow and watching the gorgeous motifs develop quickly on the needles while you knit provides lovely motivation. We think these colours are vibrant and festive but the Pine Bough Cowl is a classic addition to your winter wardrobe in any colour!

New free pattern: Flying Solo

We have another new free pattern for you this week!

FLYING SOLO is a chic and minimalist unisex ribbed cowl knit with three colours of Artfil Solo.  Two strands are held together throughout the project with one strand being changed at a time to create a series of ombre stripes. The cowl is knit from the bottom up with the front and back flap knit separately and then joined to knit in the round.

While we chose a neutral palette, we think this cowl would be stunning worked up with a series of saturated and/or speckled hand-dyed Solo colourways in brights and jewel tones.

Artfil Solo is a lusciously soft fingering weight single-ply merino – a perfect choice for accessories and garments that will be worn next to the skin.

Designed by Yana Petrova of ARTFIL for Espace Tricot.

New store sample: Icon by Shellie Anderson

Icon by Shellie Anderson is a stunning, high-fashion accessory perfectly in line with what we’ve come to expect of patterns from the Shibui Knits yarn company. Graphic and modern, the wrap is worked flat and uses short rows to create the striking wedges of colour.  We opted for a slightly looser gauge, and did short rows every five stitches instead of six, for a finished object that is a little wider and longer than the original. Knit with Shibui’s new Birch yarn, this wrap is not only stylish – it’s warm and heavenly soft! And it’s no wonder, Birch is spun in a single ply of extra fine merino with a micron count approaching cashmere’s!

New store sample: Lil’ Rosebud Dress / Tunic by OGE Knitwear Designs

We have another new store sample for you this week! How sweet is the Lil’ Rosebud Dress / Tunic by OGE Knitwear Designs knit up with Tanis Fiber Arts PureWash DK in the Rose Grey colourway? This a well-written pattern with round-by-round instructions and very simple construction. The yoke section is easy to memorize, but be sure to read carefully when moving to the body section as the rate of increase changes ;-). The Purewash DK is a dream to knit with – so soft and with great stitch definition. This organic, machine-washable merino is a perfect choice for kids knits! Note that the 12-month size left us with quite a bit left of the second skein – enough for a matching hat, bonnet, or even little legwarmers.

Cocoknits Books and Tools

Sweater Workshop Book

This is one of the best-selling books we’ve ever carried and for good reason! With over 30 years of knitting, designing, and teaching experience – Julie Weisenberger has compiled nine sweater designs into the Cocoknits Sweater Workshop. These patterns employ the same simple, seamless, top-down styling techniques we’ve come to expect from Cocoknits. More than just a collection, this book explains the Cocoknits Method – a system of tracking knitting progress in your own easy to follow customized chart. Unlike most traditional patterns that create flat shapes, the tailored style of construction in these patterns creates truly three dimensional garments that impart a great fit upon completion. In addition to the patterns, Julie has dedicated a section of the book to an in-depth guide to choosing the right patterns for your figure type with considerations for colorwork, textured stitches, and hemlines all working in concert to create the right silhouette for you.

Sweater Worksheet Journal

A perfect companion to the Cocoknits Sweater Workshop book (although not required), the Cocoknits Sweater Worksheet Journal is part of a system for knitting seamless, tailored sweaters from the top down, called the Cocoknits Method. Cocoknits Sweater Worksheets make knitting sweaters using the color-coded Cocoknits Method virtually carefree, with very little counting required. Once you fill it in, it allows you to work the shaping of the yoke of any seamless, yoked sweater pattern easily and without referring to written-out instructions. These Worksheets can also be used with any seamless, yoked sweater pattern even if the pattern is not from Cocoknits. The Sweater Worksheet Journal contains 24 blank Worksheets and it becomes a diary of your sweater-knitting history. All the information – from date begun and finished, yarns used, gauge, pattern source – is recorded in its pages for future reference.

Leather Cord and Needle Stitch Holder Kit

Use the Cocoknits Leather Cord and Needle Stitch Holder Kit in lieu of scrap yarn whenever you need to hold live stitches. The threaded needles allow you to knit off of your leather cord – from whichever end you need to!

The kit contains:

  • two interior-threaded needles made of nickel plated steel
  • three lengths of leather cord
  • one long – for holding sts of sweater body (59 in/150 cm)
  • two short – for holding sts of sleeves (29.5 in /75 cm)
Precious Metal Stitch Markers

Not just silver anymore! Cocoknits Precious Metal Stitch Markers are finished with gold, silver and copper colouring! The stitch markers are steel based, so still attach to your Knitter’s Keep, Magnetic Concrete Tray or any magnet so that you can easily store and retrieve them. Use them to mark rounds, increases, decreases, and stitch patterns. Included are 6 each of three sizes in each of three finishes, 54 markers total. They come in a cute-as-a-button kraft box secured with the click of a magnet!

Brooklyn Tweed Vale

Vale is the laceweight member of Brooklyn Tweed’s all-American, breed-specific core line. This yarn begins on the Wyoming plains with 100% Rambouillet fleece, grown by sheep that trace their lineage to medieval France, where this offshoot of the merino was prized as the king of breeds. Rambouillet is even loftier and bouncier than merino, and it’s spun worsted for a soft, springy, durable two-ply yarn that yields ethereal accessories.

Scoured and combed into buttery smooth, consistent top in South Carolina, the wool travels north to Maine for spinning at an historic mill and dyeing at an eco-friendly facility nearby. Vale’s custom palette of 14 shades shares some touchstone colors with the Arbor line and fills in with sophisticated softer tones.

Vale is a polished yarn with an even weight and twist, suitable for heirloom-quality lace projects. 100% Wyoming-grown Rambouillet wool / 50g / 411 m / 450 y

Off the needles: Lumpy Space by Stephen West

Oh, how we love Stephen West patterns!  Fun and engaging from beginning to end and there’s always something new to learn. I knit this version of Lumpy Space with Hedgehog Fibres Skinny Singles for a perfect marriage of yarn and project. Watching the interplay of the beautiful colourways (Pheasant, Stone, and Graphite) was pure pleasure as the piece grew – the luscious single-ply yarn seems to glow from the inside and the overall effect is warm and moody.  This turned out to be a surprisingly quick knit, considering the size, and the unique elongated shape makes it a versatile accessory that can be worn as a wrap or scarf.

I opted to use three colours instead of four and three skeins of Skinny Singles was more than sufficient to finish the pattern to the full size. See project notes on Ravelry for information on my stripe sequence.

While we currently have lots of Stone and Pheasant in store, Graphite sold out during our recent sale. No worries, though, if this combination appeals to you, simply substitute any dark charcoal, black, or even dark brown yarn for a similar effect!  🙂

New in store: Chevron Baby Blanket Kits!

We’ve been thrilled to see nearly 5000 versions of our Chevron Baby Blanket posted to Ravelry over the last few years and it makes us so happy to think of all of the little babies around the world wrapped in these cozy, graphic stripes.  We’ve long been planning to put together kits for this pattern and, a mere 4 years after publishing it, we’ve finally managed!  The four versions we’ve curated below are perfect for those who want a decidedly girl or boy blanket as well as for those seeking a more neutral palette.

Created with Blue Sky Alpacas Organic Worsted Cotton, this blanket is a cheerful and modern addition to any baby’s collection. Easy-peasy and fun to knit, it’s a great size for strollers and car-seats and little ones will love the soft, cool feel of this environmentally friendly yarn.

Each kit contains the pattern and 1 skein each of 5 different colourways.
The finished blanket measures approximately 27.5″ x 36″.

Video Tutorial

Although a very simple design, the Chevron Baby Blanket pattern uses one or two stitches that have confused some beginner knitters.  We’re happy to let you know that a video tutorial explaining all aspects of the blanket from long-tail cast-on to casting off and blocking has been published to YouTube by iKNITS. We hope many of you will find this helpful!

Off the needles: Deschain by Leila Raabe

I posted my finished Deschain on Instagram back at the beginning of May but, with one thing and another (end of the school year, trade show attendance, etc.) it never made it to the Blog or our Ravelry project page.  I’m heading off on holiday later this week (yay!) and am currently working through a very daunting list of things to get done before I go – this is on the list, so, score one for me!

Deschain by Leila Raabe is one of the patterns in Quince & Co’s beautiful Linen Noir collection, published in the Spring.  I immediately loved the easy style of the sweater and knew that the chunky linen used in the design would give it a breezy drape perfect for layering over tank tops and tunics. I knit the second size which adds a fifth lace repeat and therefore extra overall length, something that may appeal to those who felt it looked a little too cropped in the smaller size  – each repeat adds 14 rows.  As expected, Quince & Co’s Kestrel yarn (100% linen), knit at this looser gauge, creates a swingy fabric with enough structure that I’m not at all concerned about the garment stretching out of shape.

Deschain is a super-quick and flattering knit with an interesting yet very simple lace motif – an ideal choice for a relaxed summer project!

New store sample: Cullum by Isabell Kraemer

This isn’t actually a “new” store sample – it’s been in the shop for at least a month now – but it’s finally making its way on to the blog today!

Cullum, by Isabell Kraemer, is a beautiful pattern knit with Quince & Co’s soft and supple Sparrow linen yarn.  It’s the second project we’ve knit up from Quince’s gorgeous Linen Noir collection released in the Spring (the first was Deschain) and we love how this one turned out as well. Worked seamlessly from the top-down, the pattern incorporates short rows at the neck for shaping and just enough lacy detail to add interest to this otherwise simple, breezy top. An easy-knitting pleasure from beginning to end.

Re-stocked: Meadow and Acadia from The Fibre Company!

MEADOW

Meadow, from the Fibre Company, is a delightful blend of four luxurious fibers which are spun together and kettle dyed. The merino, baby llama, silk, and linen fibers all take dyes to varying degrees resulting in a unique blend that is beautifully heathered with gorgeous colour depth.  The individual qualities of drape, softness, sheen, and crisp stitch definition brought by the different fibers makes this a “must-try” yarn for shawls, scarves, and lightweight garments! Each 100g skein is 549 m making just one enough for most accessory projects.

Yippee! Our first order of this yarn flew out of the store in record time so we’re happy to report that it’s back in stock. What better way for knitters to celebrate Canada’s 150th Birthday than with Handmaiden’s curated collection highlighting 13 of Canada’s National Parks, one for each province and territory! Each colourway stunningly captures the distinctive essence of these national treasures – see photos below.

The Handmaiden National Parks Collection is available at Espace Tricot in the Merino Slim base – a beautiful single-ply 100% superwash merino.

Limited quantities available.

Finished objects: One for me and one for the store – Lizzie and BlueSand Cardigan

After years of knitting store samples almost exclusively, Lisa and I have been knitting a few things for ourselves lately so, while BlueSand is a brand-spanking new cardigan now living in the shop, Lizzie has happily taken up residence in my own closet.  Complete details for both projects have now been added to our Ravelry project page. 🙂

Lizzie by Julie Weisenberg / Cocoknits

As many of you will know, Julie Weisenberger’s (Cocoknits) beautiful new book – Sweater Workshop – landed in store a couple of months ago and we were immediately smitten by the beautiful tailored, seamless, top-down sweater designs found within its pages.  Employing the Cocoknits Method, a system of tracking knitting progress in an easy to follow chart, each pattern features styling techniques that enhance the overall fit and customizability of the garment.

I decided to cast on the Lizzie pattern first and chose The Fibre Company’s luscious Acadia (a merino, alpaca, and silk blend) to allow this to function as a transitional spring to summer garment. Although I’ve knit several Cocoknits patterns before, there were several new-to-me techniques employed in shaping the neck, yoke, and shoulders involved here that were so interesting – like putting together a puzzle. I loved the learning process and am absolutely thrilled with the look those techniques gave the top of this sweater. More than that, the fit and the way this cardigan sits perfectly only my shoulders without slipping or shifting has made me a convert to this style of sweater construction!

BlueSand Cardigan by La Maison Rililie

The BlueSand Cardigan by La Maison Rililie has long been a pattern we thought would make a great store sample and, early this spring, we finally settled on the yarn and palette we wanted to use. Our Sasha knit this up for us in a flash and we couldn’t be happier with the result! Knit with ARTFIL Mericana DK, a 100% superwash 4-ply merino, the fabric of this sweater is soft and smooth but strong, springy, and pill-resistant.  ARTFIL yarns are “spray-painted” in an eco-friendly manner and the process of building up the dye in layers allows for the creation of  deep saturated colourways that are so beautiful knit up.  The pattern itself is easy to follow and there are so many unique details included in the process – texture, stripes, i-cord, etc. – that the knitting of this sweater never gets boring.

Off the Needles: Trimont Snood

My version of Sylvia Hager’s Trimont Snood is off my needles and I couldn’t be happier. While I loved the look of this pattern in the original Blue Sky Fibers Woolstok (and may very well do another version for winter in that yarn), I had my heart set on using Julie Asselin’s Leizu DK in the Jardin des Tuileries colourway. After calculating a few modifications to accommodate the lighter weight yarn (see our Ravelry project page for details), I cast this very simple project onto my 6 mm needles and was finished in flash. The result is an airy and comfortable shoulder warmer that I will keep with me all spring and summer, ready to pull out in overly air-conditioned spaces and on cool evenings!
